Full Story
Raised in the small city of Redding, California, Kris grew up running amok in the great outdoors – even learning how to swim before she could walk. Although Kris and both of her brothers would ultimately be diagnosed with FSH Muscular Dystrophy they were raised to be fiercely tenacious and independent. Kris's creative passion was sparked by countless stylistic obsessions. Musically this ranged from her brother’s influences of David Bowie, Blondie, and all things punk to her father's love for musical theatre such as My Fair Lady and her mother's penchant for Beethoven and Bach.
Always surrounded by the arts, Kris studied dance starting at the age of 3 and continued through her first years of university. She would go onto graduate from the University of California, Santa Barbara, with a BA in Art History.
Moving to Los Angeles, Kris's first jobs ranged from assisting a Fine Jewelry and Gem Specialist to teaching art at elementary schools and answering phones at Propaganda Films - which was the launching pad for directors such as David Fincher, Michael Bay, and Antoine Fuqua. At Propaganda Films, she stopped every stylist and costume designer who came through and asked, “how can I learn to do what you do?”
Ever tenacious, Kris’s early career was a spectacular education. Starting with costume assisting on various music videos, she worked as a costumer on two Michael Jackson Music Videos, Remember the Time, Dir. John Singleton and Who Is It, Dir. David Fincher. Then she quickly landed a non-union costumer PA position on the first season of the era defining Beverly Hills, 90210. From there she worked on a single seasoned show, Great Scott, starring Toby McGuire and Kevin Connolley, created by Tom Gammill and Max Pross, which garnered Kris membership in IATSE, Motion Picture Costumers Union. Under the mentorship of Emmy nominated Costume Designer, Tom McKinley (High School Musical, I’ll Fly Away), Kris Costumed Supervised many long form television specials.
Kris broke into film by working on cult classics such as Pulp Fiction and Reality Bites. Assisting in a fitting with Uma Thurman one day, Kris was able to witness the creative process while Uma and Quentin Tarantino figured out when Mia Wallace’s birthday was and what she would eat for breakfast. Her creativity was further emboldened by working with Lousie Mingenbach for many years on the genre defining X-Men Movies ( X-Men, X2: X-Men United, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine). The stripes she earned on these films would one day garner her an Emmy nomination of her own with the iconic superhero looks from one of Nickelodeon's most prolific franchises.
In 2003, Kris joined the Costume Designers Guild of America and started her tenure at Nickelodeon. Her first show was ALL THAT, a children’s production in the style of Saturday Night Live. From that point, Kris Dangl became the Costume Designer of Nickelodeon's most popular Live Action TV shows; Drake & Josh, Zoey 101, iCarly, Victorious, Sam and Cat, Fairly Oddparents: Fairly Odder, Henry Danger, and her Emmy Nominated work on the spin-off series, Danger Force. These iconic shows defined a generation's childhood and are still beloved to this day. You can find these series streaming on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Paramount+.
